Charge Controllers are crucial for any Solar Electric system that is being used for battery charging. Overcharging batteries can be detrimental to the health of the battery, and can damage it to the point that it is no longer useable. To prevent batteries from being overcharged by Solar Panels that are always running when the sun is striking them, a Charge Controller should be used.
